Thai Cabinet Approves High-Speed Rail Project from Korat to Nong Khai; PM Pushes Land Bridge and Chinese Investments

February 4 – The Thai Cabinet has approved the second phase of the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project, which will extend the railway from Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) to Nong Khai. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has instructed close monitoring of the project to ensure smooth progress.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, previously announced that the high-speed rail project linking Bangkok to Nong Khai will enter its second phase, covering 357.12 kilometers with a construction budget of 341.35 billion baht.

Following Cabinet approval, the bidding process for contractors is expected to begin, with construction commencing in 2025 and completion slated for 2031. Once operational, the high-speed rail will enhance travel efficiency and safety for passengers while serving as a strategic trade and investment corridor between Thailand, Laos, and China.

Economic and Investment Cooperation with China

Government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsub stated that during the Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister outlined key objectives for Thailand’s official engagements with China. Economic cooperation, trade, and investment remain top priorities, particularly in industries critical to the green and digital transitions. These include electric vehicles (EVs), semiconductors, and data centers.

The Prime Minister has directed the Cabinet to emphasize strict regulatory oversight on product quality and safety, particularly in the agricultural and food sectors. Additionally, the government is moving forward with the Land Bridge project, welcoming Chinese investments to support infrastructure development.

Accelerating Budget Disbursement and Economic Stimulation

PM Paetongtarn also stressed the urgency of budget disbursement across ministries. On February 3, she held a meeting to accelerate investment expenditure, particularly in key ministries such as Transport, Agriculture, Interior, and Defense. Another follow-up meeting is scheduled for late March, with the Comptroller General’s Department tasked with ensuring funds are released on schedule.

The Prime Minister urged the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister to closely monitor the progress, emphasizing that timely budget disbursement is crucial for economic stimulation.

Strengthening Security and Bilateral Relations

Regarding national security and cross-border crime, the Prime Minister instructed the responsible ministers to enhance safety measures for tourists and crack down on transnational criminal networks, particularly call center scams.

In fostering stronger Thailand-China relations, the government aims to accelerate human resource development and cultural exchanges. As part of this initiative, Thailand is preparing to welcome a new pair of giant pandas from China as goodwill ambassadors later this year.

Cross-Border Utilities and Security Measures

Lastly, the Prime Minister addressed concerns over water and electricity supply to neighboring countries. If any violations are detected, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has been tasked with coordinating with the National Security Council (NSC) to assess appropriate measures while prioritizing national interests and public welfare. In cases where supply disruptions are necessary, the government will act accordingly.

The government remains committed to boosting economic growth, enhancing infrastructure, and strengthening Thailand’s strategic position in regional trade and investment.
